Fight Back

Life is a lot like a playground and it’s all about fun and games and swings and merry go rounds, monkey bars, baseball fields, soccer fields and winning. My mind has taken a journey today back to the dreams of my third grade existence. It’s all good, I haven’t lost my mind, I’ve just been reminded of some really important stuff that we all should have learned before we left elementary school.

The only reason I went to school was because it was the law and my parents were law abiding citizens. My motivation was recess period. Oh yea, I also lived for the milk and peanut butter cookie break at 10am every morning. Life was a breeze. I was active enough that the cookies were not a weight issue and I was athletic enough to make some pretty impressive moves like jumping from the swing at it’s highest point, or being able to not only make it across the monkey bars by skipping every other rung, but I could also impress the third grade girls by being able to walk across the top of the monkey bars too. In the third grade, I was so fast I could out run the girls who wanted me to be their boyfriend. I was convinced that Cooties was a real disease and it could only be passed to me from a girl who obviously had them. I was really fast in the third grade so my family never had to deal with me coming down with Cooties.

Life on the playground was great until the 4th grade when a new player was introduced to my world. He was a bully. His name was Billy Coleman! He was slower than me, shorter than me, dumber than me, uglier than me and everybody knew it, except Billy Coleman. He was convinced that he was the greatest thing that the fourth grade had ever seen and it was his job to shout his greatness from the playground to the bus stop. According to Billy nobody was as terribly terrific as he was. He was the epitome of tooting your own horn. In fact, Billy tooted his horn so much he could have been an entire horn section in the band.

We all knew Billy was a bully, but it was too much trouble to try and prove him wrong so we just let him have his way. It seemed harmless. He would break line at the monkey bars and just dare somebody to stop him, of course we didn’t. He would demand two cookies and take someone’s if he needed too and we just didn’t see the need to say anything. If need be somebody would just break their cookie in half and give it to the offended party, so we never really had to confront Billy the Bully!

It was that way through the fifth grade, and then the sixth grade and on into the 7th grade. Three years I had been dealing with this rat of a guy and just turning away and letting him have his way. Until that one day that and it will forever go down in the history of Bryan Station Junior High School.

Here’s how it went down! I was coming out of the school lunchroom by myself. There was a group of teachers about twenty feet in front of me and out of no where, Billy the Bully Coleman stepped in front of me with, of all things, a cookie, and he threw it at the teachers and it hit one of them in the back of the head. Before they could turn around to see that Billy threw it, Billy had ducked inside a classroom and left me standing alone as if I was the one who had done this evil deed.

These teachers took me directly to Principal Shiflets office and told him that I had thrown this deadly cookie at them and had struck one of them in the back of the head. Mr. Shiflet looked at me and asked me what possessed me to do such a horrible thing. This was the day that would forever shape my life. I had to choose to roll over, turn my back, turn the other cheek or do something nobody had done, “Stand Up to the Bully”. I’ll never forget the look on the Principal’s face when I told him that it was not I who had flung that cookie at the teachers, but it was Billy Coleman, the Bully. Mr. Shiflet and the teachers looked shocked because certainly I was no match for the school bully. Why would I want to put myself in harms way and make such an outlandish statement. There was no reason to do it, unless I was standing for the truth. I WAS TIRED OF ROLLING OVER AND LETTING THIS BULLY HAVE HIS WAY. IT WAS TIME FOR SOMEBODY TO STOP HIM AND IT LOOKED LIKE I HAD BEEN SELECTED TO MAKE A STAND!

Billy and his father were called to the office as well as myself and my dad. Billy looked at me with gritting teeth and whispered like a demon, “I’m gonna kill you Higgins.” I looked at Billy and his dad and said, “Am I therefore your enemy because I’ve told the truth?” I stood by my story, knowing that it could cost me my life. I didn’t care if Billy punched me, shot me, beat me up, cursed me or what, it didn’t matter! I had to make a stand. It was a matter of life and death in the core of my being.

Billy finally admitted that he had thrown the cookie. He was suspended from school for three days. I was celebrated by the teaching staff as well as the students as their new hero. Billy never made good on his threats of beating me to death. From that day forward other people stopped letting Billy Bully them. After a while it became evident that Billy wasn’t so bad. He had a big bark, but no bite.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MY WORLD TODAY? I’m glad you asked! Life is filled with bullies. Some you can see, and some you can’t see. Some of the meanest bullies I have had to deal with were the ones you couldn’t see. They were the ones that would come around after a loss and try to tell me because I lost one game that I was now branded as a loser. I got to tell you that one loss doesn’t make you a loser. There’s that bully that has been knocking on your door lately that keeps telling you that it ain’t gonna get any better than this, it’s gonna get worse. That’s a bunch of bull from a bully! The worst is over and the best is yet to come! Your latter days shall be greater than your former!

The big bad bully that comes huffing and puffing and trying to blow your world apart is all wind. The wolf huffed and he puffed and he tried to blow the little pigs house down that was built with brick and he couldn’t do it. Your life is founded on the rock Christ Jesus! You are an heir to Trillions of dollars! Your future has never been brighter, but the bully will try his best to steal your joy, your dreams and your tomorrows by believing that his threats are true.

I HEARD THE LORD SAY TO ME TODAY THAT IT WAS TIME TO FIGHT BACK! Is that scriptural you may ask? Sho is! Paul said that when you have done all that you can do to stand, then make your stand. Don’t make it naked! You make it standing in the armor of God! God gave you armor to give you a fighting chance against the schemes that have been designed to take you down! FIGHT BACK!   There are Billy Coleman’s in the darkness that you’ve been laying down and letting the enemy walk all over you! No more! YOU GOTTA DRAW A LINE IN THE DIRT AND SAY NO MORE! YOU’VE TAKEN IT LONG ENOUGH! IT’S TIME TO FIGHT BACK!

Father in the name of Jesus, my friend has been battling spiritual bullies from the dark side. Right now in the name of Jesus we decide that there is no place for these bullies in our lives. You have told us to take a stand and as we do, let the armor of God become such a reality that we can almost feel it! We have not only a fighting chance, but we are already more than conquerors through you! This is a new day!  If one of us can put a thousand bullies to flight, then two of us can put 10,000 on the run! In the name of Jesus turn the tide of victory in our favor! I declare it has been turned and the flavor and favor of victory is ours! There is an overflow of power and anointing that is ours today for the sake of the Kingdom of God! In the name of Jesus! Amen

Ephesians 6:10 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

11* Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12* For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13* Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14* Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15* and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16* above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

17* And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

18* praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”
